Liz Heitmann, MA, AMFT

We are living in a time of accelerated change and uncertainty. This adds complexity to being human and requires us to be even more intentional in our choices. If you are facing a major life transition, relationship challenges, trauma, loss, or simply seeking a more authentic and connected life, therapy can provide a safe, non-judgmental space for healing and growth.

Integrative therapy is a dynamic and personalized approach that aims to maximize therapeutic effectiveness by thoughtfully combining different therapeutic tools and techniques to meet your unique needs.

I use a relational and collaborative approach to explore who you are, what you value and where you find meaning. Building on your strengths, while gently addressing any issues that may be holding you back, together we’ll work toward helping you live with greater intention, authenticity, and joy in the present moment.

About my approach and background

I work with individuals, couples and families challenged in relationships and/or navigating important life transitions, including marriage and divorce, financial, career, parenting, retirement, grief and loss and aging.  I also support individuals as well as family members of those struggling with mental health challenges and addiction.

My integrative approach to therapy is strongly grounded in psychodynamic and existential theories.  The combination of psychodynamic and existential theories in psychotherapy offers clients a powerful and holistic path to growth and healing. By integrating psychodynamic insights, clients gain a deeper understanding of how past experiences and unconscious patterns shape their current emotions, behaviors, and relationships. At the same time, existential therapy invites clients to reflect on life’s big questions—meaning, values, freedom, and responsibility—empowering them to make authentic choices and find purpose in the present. This blend allows clients not only to resolve old wounds and break free from limiting patterns, but also to clarify what truly matters to them, fostering greater self-awareness, resilience, and a more meaningful, intentional life.

In addition to my professional psychotherapy skills, I draw from several decades of experience as a personal finance advisor and certified life coach, helping individuals, couples and families navigate life's most consequential financial decisions during major life transitions, including marriage, family planning, divorce and end of life.  My broad academic background includes the sciences, philosophy, and art.

I love traveling to explore different cultures and perspectives. I was raised in Santa Barbara and attended UC Santa Barbara for my undergraduate degree.  I have two grown children and a beloved Sheltie.
